Outstanding achievements by renowned women in marine research have long remained hidden. A special exhibition opening on July 25, 2025, at the International Maritime Museum Hamburg will offer exciting insights into the creativity of these female scientists until the end of the year.
Motto: "Breaking the Surface. Women in Marine Research." Loosely translated: Don't stay on the surface, but venture into unknown areas of the oceans, truly delve into the depths. The focus on Deck 7 is on eleven contemporary German female researchers. These are impressive examples of how women have been advancing maritime science – from time immemorial, often in the face of adversity.

"Those who embark on an excursion into new territory in our current special exhibition will experience something interesting and informative," says museum director Peter Tamm. The drive with enormous commitment, solid knowledge, personal curiosity and experience of these eleven scientists will be intelligently and
The internationally renowned photographer Marzena Skubatz gives the portraits a unique character – also in the visual language of her close-ups.

"We present portraits and voices of female researchers who are currently making a difference at institutes in this country," says Dr. Sonja Schäfer, who is responsible for the project at Kaispeicher B. Together with the University of Hamburg and in cooperation with the German Alliance for Marine Research, the female protagonists are presented in an unconventional way. Among the researchers portrayed are Professors Johanna Baehr (CEN University Hamburg), Antje Boetius (most recently at the Alfred Wegener Institute), and Katja Matthes (GEOMAR). There are good reasons why this exhibition is a UN Ocean Decade event.
