Hamburg’s maritime heart beats here
Since 2008, the listed Kaispeicher B has been home to the Peter Tamm Collection. The world’s largest private maritime collection was transferred to a charitable foundation in 2003 and is now presented to the public on nine exhibition decks. Ship models – including models made of gold and silver – merchant shipping, cruise dreams, naval history and marine research – precious exhibits from all over the world tell living history and stories from three thousand years of seafaring.
The Kaispeicher B at Magdeburger- and Brooktorhafen was built in 1878/79 on behalf of the Silospeicher Kommandit-Gesellschaft J.W. Boutin according to plans by Bernhard Georg Jacob Hanssen and Wilhelm Emil Meerwein. The ten-story brick building is thus about ten years older than the buildings in Speicherstadt – and today it is Hamburg’s oldest warehouse and the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Speicherstadt.
The Kaispeicher B has been a listed building since 2000 and is maintained by the Peter Tamm Sen. Foundation. In 2005, the City of Hamburg granted the foundation use of the building for 99 years.
